WSJ: Israel plans to flood Hamas tunnels with seawater

Tunnel

The Israeli army is considering the idea of flooding the tunnels of the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip with seawater.

The Israeli army plans to flood the Hamas tunnels

As noted, the IDF installed five large water pumps near Al-Shati, a refugee camp in Gaza City, in November.

These pumps are powerful enough to pump thousands of cubic meters of water into the Hamas tunnels per hour and flood them in a few weeks.

Although Israel has not yet decided whether to implement this plan, it has warned US officials.

The reaction in the United States was mixed, writes WSJ. Some officials have raised concerns about potential damage to the enclave's aquifer and soil.

We are not sure how successful the pumping will be because no one knows the details of the tunnels and the land around them. It's impossible to know if it will be effective because we don't know how seawater will flow in tunnels that no one has been in before, the WSJ quoted its source.

The war between Israel and Hamas

It will be recalled that Hamas militants invaded Israel on October 7. Terrorists started killing and kidnapping both military and civilian people. Soon, Jerusalem announced Operation Iron Swords and shelled terrorist positions in the Gaza Strip.

On November 24, a temporary truce began between Israel and Hamas for the release of prisoners. At the same time, the parties agreed on a ceasefire for four days but decided to extend it for another two days, with the condition that the militants release more hostages.

On December 1, Israel resumed hostilities in the Gaza Strip. The IDF said that Hamas violated the terms of the ceasefire.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel returned fire after Hamas refused to release the hostages, including two children.
