American M1 Abrams tanks have been fighting in the Avdiivka area for over a month. 47th AFU Separate Mechanized Brigade was equipped with machines that published a combat work video.

47th AFU Brigade published a video of the Abrams tanks' combat operation

In the video, you can see tank strikes on the positions of the Russian occupiers. It is noted that Abrams shows high survivability in battle.

All ammunition is located outside the tower in a special rear niche. When hit, the energy of the explosion goes up. And the powerful multi-layered armour makes the Abrams one of the most protected tanks in the world, the 47th Brigade message said.

This is the first official recognition of the combat use of Abrams in Ukraine.

The military recalled that tanks of this model were baptized during the war in the Persian Gulf, as well as during the US operation to overthrow the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 2003. Abrams was also used by the US Marines in Afghanistan.

What is known about the advantages of Abrams and their use in AFU

It was previously noted that the Ukrainian military uses the received Abrams not so much as tanks but as sensor platforms that help guide the Soviet tanks of the Armed Forces.

In addition, there is a possibility that the American tanks and infantry fighting vehicles received by Ukraine are equipped with the Blue Force Tracker onboard system, which registers the location of friendly forces on a digital map.

Combining the Abrams with other combat vehicles gives the team excellent night fighting capabilities. The M-1, with its high-quality thermal imaging sights, can see almost as well at night as it does during the day, at distances of several miles.

Instead, the Russian T-72B model of 2022 has a rather primitive thermal sight that works at a distance of fewer than two kilometres.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) chief, Kyrylo Budanov, previously noted that Ukraine will use Abrams tanks carefully and only for well-designed operations.
