The Russian court sentenced the so-called former "Minister of Defense" of Russia-back organisation "DPR" Igor Girkin to four years in prison. He was accused of "public calls for extremist activities."

The Russian court imprisoned the terrorist Girkin

The Moscow City Court sentenced the former FSB officer, leader of the "DNR" terrorist Igor Girkin (aka Strelkov), to 4 years in a general regime colony.

The Russian court also banned Strelkov from administering websites on the Internet for three years.

It is reported that earlier, during the parties' debate, the prosecutor asked to sentence Girkin to four years and 11 months in a general regime prison — one month less than the maximum possible penalty under this article.

The hearings were held in closed session, but the announcement of the decisive part of the sentence was open.

What is known about Girkin and his arrest

Igor Strelkov is a Russian military man, blogger, retired officer, former FSB colonel, head of the terrorist group "Novorossiya" since 2014 and former leader of the terrorist pro-Russian military group "People's Militia of Donbas".

The SSU and the Ukraine's Office of the Prosecutor General filed charges against Girkin for terrorism, violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, torture and intentional murder. In 2019, the Netherlands placed Girkin on an internationally wanted list as a person involved in the downing of the MH-17 flight.

On November 17, 2022, the District Court of The Hague, which considered the case of the downing of the MH17 plane, found Ihor Girkin guilty of destroying the flight, his subordinates Sergei Dubinsky (call sign "Khmury") and Leonid Kharchenko (call sign "Krot"). Oleg Pulatov (call sign "Gyurza") was acquitted.

On October 16, 2022, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine announced a reward of $100,000 for the handover of Girkin to Ukrainian captivity.

On July 21, 2023, Igor Girkin was detained in Moscow. He was charged with public calls for extremist activities. Before that, he criticised Russian President Putin and Russian military commanders. On the same day, Girkin was sent to the pre-trial detention centre.
