On March 11, the Swedish flag will be raised over the NATO headquarters in Brussels. This will mark the start of the membership process.

Sweden will officially become a NATO member in the coming days

The TV4 Nyheterna reports the following will arrive in the capital of Belgium, Brussels, on Mar. 11:

  • Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson;

  • Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces Mikael Büden;

  • other high-ranking politicians of the country.

Ambassadors of NATO member countries will be invited and solemn ceremonies are planned. Press conferences will also be held in connection with the raising of the Swedish flag, the publication adds.

What is known about Sweden's accession to NATO

In 2022, after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, Sweden applied to join NATO. Turkey and Hungary opposed this decision. Later, after a series of agreements, Ankara still gave its consent.

For a long time, Hungary remained the last country not to ratify the application, which was Stockholm's last obstacle.

Hungary has repeatedly stated that it supports Sweden's membership in principle, but has continued to delay the process, asking Stockholm to stop "bullying" the Hungarian government.

On Feb. 26, the Hungarian Parliament nevertheless ratified Sweden's application to join the Alliance, and on Mar. 5, the newly elected President Tamás Sulyok signed the document.
