The Head of the Ministry of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, officially confirmed that in winter the electricity deficit in the Ukrainian energy system was 5–6 GW, and as of today it has decreased to 1 GW.
Points of attention
- Ukrainian businesses have shown resilience by adapting to the energy crisis, leading to decreased reliance on imported electricity.
- Despite recent record volumes of electricity imports, Ukraine has made significant progress in enhancing its energy self-sufficiency and sustainability.
Power outage queues in Ukraine are gradually decreasing
As of today, the deficit is 1 GW, which is five to six times less than it was in the winter. This allows, of course, to reduce the number of queues for people, it allows for slightly easier schedules for businesses.

According to him, Ukrainian business has begun to adapt, creating its own distributed generation.
Against this background, Denys Shmyhal confirmed that the cheapest and fastest way to generate electricity in Ukraine is solar power plants.
But there is a lot of sun in Ukraine, and with the arrival of sunny days, with the arrival of summer, there will be a surplus of solar energy. It must be compensated by installing appropriate batteries, the minister warned.
It is worth noting that last month Ukraine again reached record volumes of electricity imports. This is 1.26 million MWh.
In addition, it is noted that compared to January 2026, the volumes imported per month increased by 41%.
