NATO allies have agreed on a plan for annual financing of Ukraine in the amount of 40 billion euros.

Points of attention

  • The agreement provides for the creation of a coordination headquarters in Germany for the supply of weapons and training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • The alliance will appoint a person responsible for long-term assistance to Ukraine to meet the needs of military modernization and non-military support.
  • NATO leaders are expected to sign an agreement at a summit in Washington to provide Ukraine with the necessary defense equipment.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the readiness of the Alliance to provide Ukraine with air and missile defense systems at the NATO summit.

Ukraine will receive aid from NATO

NATO member countries agreed on the financing of military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 40 billion euros. Ukraine will receive these funds next year.

NATO leaders are expected to sign this commitment at a summit in Washington on July 9-11.

According to the plan, NATO will in the future take over the international coordination of arms supplies and training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, partially using the command structure of the Alliance with the attraction of funds from its common budget.

The headquarters for the coordination of aid to Ukraine will be located in Wiesbaden, in the south of Germany. There is already a US military base there.

The plan also provides that the Alliance will appoint a person responsible for long-term assistance to Ukraine. This will be a senior civilian official responsible for military modernization and non-military support needs, reporting both to NATO headquarters in Brussels and to the new command in Wiesbaden.

Appointing someone in charge could protect long-term aid — amid a strengthening position of right-wing forces in Europe and the growing possibility that former US President Donald Trump could return to the White House and reduce support for Ukraine.

What is known about the NATO summit

NATO leaders are gathering for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Washington from July 9 to 11, in part to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the military alliance.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg talked about expectations from the Alliance leaders' summit. Zelenskyy emphasized the readiness of the Alliance members to provide Ukraine with critically needed defense equipment, primarily air and missile defense systems.

At the same time, Reuters reported that Ukraine will receive "good news" in its quest for more air defense systems at the NATO summit.
