Alexander Stubb, the former prime minister of the country, won the presidential elections in Finland. In the second round, he beat the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pekka Haavisto.

The Finns elected a new president: what is known

On February 11, the second round of presidential elections ended in Finland, in which Alexander Stubb won.

As of 22:05, 100% of voters' votes were counted. Oleksandr Stubb won 51.6% of the votes, while Pekka Haavisto won 48.4%.

The winner of the presidential election in Finland

It is noted that the successor to the current president, Sauli Niinisto, will play a central role in defining Finland's NATO policy, and will also lead the overall foreign and security policy in close cooperation with the government.

Stubb will be sworn in as President of Finland on March 1, 2024.

What is known about the second round of presidential elections in Finland

The results of the first round of presidential elections were announced on January 28.

Former Prime Minister and candidate from the "Coalition Party" Alexander Stubb won in the first round, gaining 27.2% of the vote. The former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pekka Haavisto, also made it to the second round with 25.8% of support.

The politician who gets more votes in the second round will be appointed as the next president of Finland.

Stubb's position on Ukraine

In 2014-2015, Stubb was the Prime Minister of Finland, in 2015-2016, the Minister of Finance. Before becoming prime minister, Stubb also headed the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Trade, was a member of the Parliament of Finland and the European Parliament, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

As for the issue of Ukraine, Stubb stated that he does not agree with the fact that Ukraine should give at least part of its land for peace with Russia.

The future president of Finland also supports Ukraine's accession to the EU and promised to actively contribute to this process.
