American billionaire and businessman Elon Musk recently demanded that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy explain the detention of the pro-Russian blogger Gonzalo Lira in Kharkiv. However, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) decided not to comment on this issue.

What is known about the scandal surrounding the detention of Gonzalo Liru

As it turned out, Elon Musk was outraged by the fact that the American blogger Gonzalo Lira, who had lived in Kharkiv for several years and publicly supported the Russian invasion and the Russian government, and called Russian soldiers "heroes and liberators", was detained in Ukraine.

Initially, an outrageous post was published by the pro-Russian American journalist Tucker Carlson.

The latter accused official Kyiv of allegedly "torturing Gonzalo Lira". Carlson spread the fake news that the blogger had allegedly been detained for "criticising the president of Ukraine".

Elon Musk immediately responded to this lie, saying that Ukraine should release the pro-Russian blogger because the US had sent the country more than $100 billion.

Is there more to this story than just criticism of Zelenskyy? If that's all, we have a serious problem here, he wrote.

Moreover, Musk even managed to complain about Zelenskyy to the US President Joe Biden.

The SSU reacted to Elon Musk's rebuke and Zelenskyy's criticism

The Security Service of Ukraine drew the American billionaire's attention to the fact that Gonzalo Lira systematically justified Russian aggression in Ukraine and spread pro-Russian theses on his social media.

In his videos, he recognised Russia's aggression in Ukraine as legitimate, denied war crimes, claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were allegedly shelling their own territory and that Ukraine was ruled by a neo-Nazi regime, the SSU said.

The Ukrainian secret service also reminded Elon Musk that such activities are a criminal offence.

In addition, it is emphasised that the blogger is being held in custody in a pre-trial detention centre in Kharkiv.

The pre-trial investigation in this criminal proceeding has been completed, and court hearings are scheduled for 12 and 21 December 2023.
