DIU says Russia continues the active phase of "Perun" information ops against Ukraine

Russian propagandists continue the active phase of the "Perun" information operation, which is directed against Ukraine.

What is known about the Russian information ops "Perun" against Ukraine

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) stated that Russia is also trying to destabilise the political situation in the West and "create conditions for solving the tasks" of the so-called "SMO".

Moreover, operation "Perun" is also taking place in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and in most regions of Russia. Units of the Russia's National Guard and the GRU are involved, the agency said.

Kremlin propagandists give instructions to spies to carry out measures:

  • to discredit Ukrainian and Western pro-Ukrainian politicians, accusing them of corruption and betrayal of Ukraine's interests;

  • justifying the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and highlighting the situation around the Ukrainian state from positions favourable to the Kremlin;

  • the spread of misinformation in the media about the supposed "normalisation of life" in the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia with the direct participation of the Russian leadership;

  • formation of the image of "Ukrainian Nazis" in the Russian and European media space, etc.

According to the Russian methodology, the special services of the Kremlin should talk about the events in Ukraine in the first half of 2024, using at the same time both long-known and newly invented fake narratives: about the alleged planning of a coup d'état in Kyiv, accusing Ukraine of starting hostilities in Donbas, mass murder of pro-Russian activists in Odesa, the intelligence officers explained.

The DIU added that March 17, when the so-called presidential elections will be held in the Russian Federation, is the peak of the activation of propaganda activities.

The occupiers plan to complete the "Perun" operation by June 30, 2024.

Russia uses foreign journalists for propaganda against Ukraine

As a part of the "Perun" operation, Russia plans to involve foreign journalists, media persons and bloggers in order to justify aggression against Ukraine and cover the situation around Ukraine from positions favourable to the Kremlin.

So, earlier, the Centre for Countering Disinformation (CCD) reported on the American journalist Fiorella Isabel. Propaganda media call her an American journalist, but she herself does not hide that she works for the RT channel.

Isabel covers events in the world, in particular in Ukraine and the Middle East, in the light of Kremlin propaganda on social networks.

Also, a journalist originally from Iceland, Haukur Hauksson, spreads Kremlin fakes about "US bio laboratories" and "Nazis", trying to discredit Ukraine.

Also, after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Kyiv region, Haukson called the shocking reports about the atrocities of the occupiers in Bucha "the theater of the dead" and "a well-thought-out fake."

Sikorsky named the best security guarantee for Ukraine

Sikorsky voiced his position
Source:  TVN24

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, reflecting on the defense of Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia, stated that the best guarantee of security for the country is the Ukrainian army.

Points of attention

  • Ukraine's well-equipped and experienced army, known for its use of drones, plays a crucial role in ensuring the country's security.
  • French leader Macron is contemplating deploying European forces in Ukraine, potentially along the Dnieper line, away from the front line.

Sikorsky voiced his position

The Polish diplomat reacted to the meeting of the leaders of the "coalition of the determined", which took place on March 27 in Paris.

What is important to understand is that the coalition is considering the possible deployment of "deterrence forces" in Ukraine in the future.

According to Sikorsky, his country will be in this coalition, but not physically in Ukraine itself.

There are various echoes of these negotiations, both at the level of staff representatives in Great Britain and at the political level in Paris. These concepts are still at the stage of agreement... The biggest, best guarantee of Ukraine's security is a brave and well-equipped Ukrainian army.

The head of Polish diplomacy once again reminded that the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the largest army in Europe, which has experience in waging this new type of war involving millions of drones.

What is important to understand is that French leader Emmanuel Macron is considering deploying a European contingent in Ukraine away from the front line, one option being deployment along the Dnieper line.

Ending the war against Ukraine could destroy Russia's economy

Putin is afraid to stop the war

The Wall Street Journal concluded that the Russian economy has become dependent on the war in terms of jobs, wages and growth. Accordingly, if a truce is achieved on the front, the aggressor country will be on the verge of collapse.

Points of attention

  • The cessation of war-related production could result in slower growth or recession in Russia in the near term.
  • Experts predict that the decrease in domestic consumption following the end of the war could further impact Russia's economy.

Putin is afraid to stop the war

According to Heli Simola, a senior economist at the Bank of Finland's Institute of Economics, almost half of the aggressor country's economic growth in 2024 was directly due to war-related production.

It is also impossible to ignore the fact that payments to the families of Russian invaders fighting in Ukraine have increased the well-being of some of the poorest regions of the country.

Experts predict that the cessation of such stimulation will lead to a decrease in domestic consumption.

If Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wants to avoid economic collapse, he will have to continue spending at current levels long after the war is over.

If military spending is cut, it will lead to job losses and general disillusionment in many Russian regions, said Janis Kluge, a Russia expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

According to Capital Economics forecasts, the decline in spending could lead to slower growth or even recession in Russia in the near term.
