Ukraine's court sentences 15 Russia's soldiers for brutal treatment of civilians in Yahidne of Chernihiv region

Russian Army

The court sentenced 15 Russian occupiers in absentia to 12 years in prison for the brutal treatment of civilians in Yahidne village of the Chernihiv region.

Condemnation of the Russian military

The Russian occupiers were found guilty of violating the laws and customs of war committed by a group of persons (Chapter 1 of Article 28, Chapter 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Prosecutors proved that at the beginning of Mar. 2022, the Russian military, while in the occupied village of Yahidne, Chernihiv district, deprived them of their freedom and forcibly detained 368 people, including 69 minors, in the basement of the Yagidne's school as "human shields".

Thus, residents were used to cover the command post from possible offensive actions by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

10 civilians died in the "cellar of death" due to inhuman conditions of detention and failure to provide the necessary medical care.

What is known about the events in the village of Yahidne

At the beginning of the invasion, the village was under Russian occupation for about a month. The occupiers gathered the villagers in the basement of the local school, where they held them for four weeks.

There was no sewage, lighting, or ventilation in the basement, and people lacked water and food.

Three hundred fifty village residents were in a basement with an area of 197 m² for 28 days from March 3 to March 31, 2022.

Seventy-seven prisoners were children. The youngest was 1.5 months old. Ten people died, and Russian troops killed another 17.

The Ukrainian military liberated the village on March 30, 2022.

The introduction of peacekeepers into Ukraine. What is the main problem?

Only two allies are ready to fully support Ukraine
Source:  The New York Times

On March 27, a meeting of the "coalition of the willing" was held in Paris, during which the introduction of foreign troops into Ukraine to deter Russian aggression was actively discussed. As of today, only France and Britain support the idea of deploying "pacification forces" in Ukraine.

Points of attention

  • Italy supports sending troops as part of a UN mission, while Poland has rejected this possibility altogether, adding to the lack of unity.
  • Accelerating negotiations for a ceasefire and ensuring financing and supply of weapons are crucial steps towards resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Only two allies are ready to fully support Ukraine

French and British leaders Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer have said they are ready to deploy "peacekeeping forces" to Ukrainian soil after the war ends.

According to Macron himself, the contours of these forces are still being refined, and details about who is prepared to do what are still scarce.

As journalists managed to learn, "this has increased the sense of ambiguity surrounding diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the fighting."

We must accelerate negotiations to achieve a ceasefire, we must accelerate our ability to finance and supply weapons, and prepare plans for the Ukrainian army and peacekeeping forces.

What is important to understand is that Italy wants to send troops if they are part of a UN mission, while Poland has rejected this possibility altogether.

The main problem is that there is no "unanimity" among European leaders regarding the introduction of forces into Ukraine.

500% duties and more. The US has developed a new plan to take revenge on Russia

Russia faces even greater sanctions
Source:  online.ua

US senators have introduced a bipartisan bill to impose sanctions on the aggressor country of Russia in the event that dictator Vladimir Putin thwarts US President Donald Trump's peaceful efforts to end the war against Ukraine.

Points of attention

  • The dominant view in the US Senate is that Russia is the aggressor, and tough sanctions, such as tariffs on countries purchasing Russian products, are necessary to address the ongoing conflict.
  • American leader Donald Trump has shown irritation over Putin's delay in ceasefire negotiations, indicating growing tension between the US and Russia.

Russia faces even greater sanctions

Journalists point out that half of the US Senate, led by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, worked on the new sanctions plan.

According to the senators, these restrictions would be put into effect if peace talks fail or an agreement is reached but Russia violates it.

According to the latest data, this primarily concerns 500 percent duties on imported goods from countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other Russian products.

The dominant view in the US Senate is that Russia is the aggressor, and that this terrible war and Putin's aggression must stop now and be restrained in the future, the authors of the new plan emphasized.

According to the senators, sanctions against the aggressor country Russia will include the introduction of tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other products.

They are tough for a reason, American politicians noted.

By the way, recently, American leader Donald Trump for the first time expressed irritation over dictator Putin's delay in ceasefire negotiations.
